Coffee is one of the most popular beverages across the world, brewed from roasted coffee beans that are the seeds of berries from the Coffea species. These seeds are carefully picked, processed, and then dried. Known as a great energy booster, coffee production in India is dominated by the lush, shade-grown plantations of the southern states. With rising global demand, IndianXporter proudly stands as a leading international coffee exporter, offering premium green and roasted beans to connoisseurs and retailers worldwide.
The two broad species of coffee are Coffee Arabica and Coffee Robusta. Arabica is the most popular coffee globally, followed closely by Robusta. Beyond these broad categories, we source and export exclusive varieties originating from the southern states of India, ensuring a rich body, balanced acidity, and distinct aroma in every cup.
Arabian Coffee, popularly known as Arabica, is made from the beans of the Coffea arabica plant. Originally from Ethiopia, Arabica is prized for its mildly sweet flavor, often accompanied by complex hints of fruits, berries, chocolate, nuts, and caramel.
Coffea canephora, or Robusta, is the second most popular species. Known for its strong, earthy flavor and higher caffeine content, Robusta is rich in antioxidants. It is often celebrated for its health benefits, including improving overall health, supporting skin health, and acting as a natural remedy for headaches or migraines.
Typica is a renowned sub-variety of Arabica Coffee. One of the most popular and historically significant coffees in the world, it originated in Ethiopia and is now grown in select regions globally. It has a clean, sweet cup with a delicate floral and fruity profile.
Bourbon is another famous type of coffee under the Arabica species, characterized by its tall plants. Originating in Yemen, Bourbon coffee yields a sweet, complex flavor. It is said to help reduce stress, relax the mind, aid in weight management, and improve heart health by balancing cholesterol levels.
Gesha or Geisha is an exclusive, rare, and highly sought-after variety of the Arabica species. With its origins in Ethiopia, it possesses a very unique, delicate texture and a floral, tea-like profile. It is widely considered one of the most incredible and luxurious Arabica coffees available in the global market.

Coffee is the seed of the Coffea fruit, roasted and brewed into the world's second-most traded commodity after crude oil. India is the only country that grows all of its coffee under shade, beneath a two-tier canopy of evergreen and fruit trees across the hill ranges of Karnataka (which alone accounts for ~70% of output), Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. This unique shade-grown agroforestry system produces a mild, low-acidity cup with full body and a heavy aroma that is distinctly Indian.
India produces both Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora), with Robusta accounting for roughly 70% of the national crop. Indian washed Robusta โ graded 'Robusta Parchment AB' and the premium 'Kaapi Royale' โ is internationally regarded as the finest Robusta in the world, prized by European espresso blenders for the crema, body, and balance it lends to a blend. Arabica is offered as washed 'Plantation' (Arabica Plantation A/PB) and unwashed 'Cherry' grades.
India's signature specialty is Monsooned Malabar โ green Arabica or Robusta beans exposed to the moisture-laden south-west monsoon winds for 12โ16 weeks along the Malabar coast. The beans swell, pale to a golden colour, and develop a heavy, mellow, almost musty body with near-zero acidity. A Geographical Indication (GI)-protected product, Monsooned Malabar AA commands a strong premium in Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan, where it is impossible to replicate from any other origin.

Espresso & Specialty Roasting
Indian washed Robusta (Kaapi Royale) and Arabica Plantation are core to Italian and European espresso blends, delivering crema, body and balance. Monsooned Malabar is sought by specialty roasters for single-origin and dark-roast offerings.
Instant & Soluble Coffee
Robusta Cherry and lower Plantation grades feed soluble/instant coffee extraction lines for their higher solubles yield and caffeine content. Major demand from instant coffee manufacturers across Europe and the Middle East.
Retail & Private Label
Roasted whole-bean and ground coffee in vacuum bricks and pouches for supermarket private-label and cafรฉ chain programs, with custom branding and barcoding.
Cafรฉs, HoReCa & Vending
Blend and single-origin supply to cafรฉ chains, hotels, restaurants and vending operators requiring consistent body and crema at scale.
Primary Supply Origins
Brazil
~35% of global productionWorld's largest producer โ Arabica naturals dominant; sets global Arabica price.
Vietnam
~17%Largest Robusta producer; volume-competitive, mostly natural Robusta for instant coffee.
India
~3โ4% (5thโ6th largest)Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu โ 100% shade-grown; world's finest washed Robusta & GI Monsooned Malabar.
Key Consumption Nodes
European Union โ Italy, Germany, Belgium entry ports
Largest market for Indian washed Robusta espresso blends. Italy and Germany are anchor buyers; EUDR traceability now decisive. Trieste and Hamburg are key entry ports.
Italy โ espresso heartland
Italian roasters are the premier buyers of Indian Robusta Parchment and Kaapi Royale for crema and body in espresso blends.
Russia & CIS
Major destination for Indian Robusta into instant coffee manufacturing and roast-blend markets.
Middle East โ UAE, Saudi Arabia
Growing cafรฉ culture and re-export hub; strong demand for blends and private-label roasted coffee via Jebel Ali.
Coffee is a ~$130 billion global retail industry built on a green-bean trade priced off the ICE Arabica 'C' and London Robusta futures. India sits in a quality niche โ the world's only 100% shade-grown origin, home to the finest washed Robusta and the irreplaceable GI Monsooned Malabar โ rather than competing on raw volume with Brazil and Vietnam.
Market Size
Global coffee retail: ~$130 billion. India's coffee exports: ~$1.2โ1.4 billion (FY2024โ25), ~70% Robusta
Growth Rate
~5โ6% CAGR โ driven by specialty coffee, premium Robusta demand and cafรฉ culture in emerging markets
Core Demand Drivers
Supply Dynamics
Indian production (~3.5โ3.6 lakh MT/year) is constrained by erratic monsoon patterns, rising labour costs, white-stem borer pressure on Arabica, and ageing plantations. Robusta has gained share as it is hardier and higher-yielding. India re-exports negligible volumes โ it is a true producing origin with ~70% of output exported.
โ India Risk Factor
Climate volatility (untimely blossom/backing showers and excess monsoon rain at harvest) is the primary risk to crop size and quality. White-stem borer threatens Arabica. EUDR compliance and OTA (ochratoxin) limits are the key export-market risks; labour shortages raise picking costs.
Future Outlook
India's shade-grown, EUDR-ready credentials position it to capture premium European demand as deforestation rules bite. Fine washed Robusta (Kaapi Royale) and GI Monsooned Malabar will increasingly separate from commodity Vietnamese Robusta, while domestic cafรฉ growth tightens exportable surplus and supports firm differentials.
